In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State’s damaged transportation system. Dianne Steinhauser was a Senior Transportation Engineer when the Loma Prieta earthquake occurred. In this interview she discusses her experience with the earthquake in San Francisco and her subsequent involvement at the Oak Street office establishing and mapping the route closures across District 4 and updating this list. She also notes the communication difficulties between different Caltrans divisions and maintenance facilities.

Since I live close to Oak Street, and I just had this need to not think about everything that was happening and somehow become useful, I went down Oak Street to see if I could help.
